Biomimicry: Lessons from the Gypsophila Paniculata

While taking a sustainable design class in college, I had the opportunity to study an object from the natural world and design a biomimetic solution based on that object to apply to any problem existing in our current world. I studied the baby’s breath plant, aka “gypsophila paniculata” and found so much wisdom hidden in this little flower; I picked just a few of these lessons to apply to a business concept / community resource system informed by the workings of this plant. Throughout this process, I took great inspiration from Michael Braungart and William McDonough’s book, Cradle to Cradle.

The System

The biomimetic resource system relies on natural materials that can be exchanged back and forth throughout the community & ecosystem and return their nutrients back into the soil once their use is done.

Studying the Gypsophila Paniculata

The system outlined above was inspired by the beauty of the flower’s forms and the research into the inner workings of this delicate plant and its relationship with the ecosystem.
